Three people have been charged with a daylight burglary spree in which
the suspects sought to steal firearms from township home and then trade
the guns for drugs, police said Tuesday.
At least five guns were taken in the burglaries between
Sept. 4 and Jan. 17, including one handgun that turned up at a Wilkes-Barre
murder scene, investigators said.
Various other items from jewelry and coins to video games
were also stolen, then pawned, police allege.
Police issued arrest warrants Tuesday for Leo Jarmusik Jr., 23, East Main
Street, Glen Lyon, Newport Township; Edward Lee Ruzanski, 21, East Washington
Street, Nanticoke; and Melinda Fink, Hunlock Creek and Nanticoke.
The gun that factored into the murder, a Ruger .22 caliber revolver, was
among three firearms stolen the morning of Jan. 17 by Ruzanski from 1098
Hillside Road. Later in the day, Ruzanski, Jarmusik, Fink and another
man drove to Carlisle Street, Wilkes-Barre, where two of the three guns
were sold for 10 bags of heroin, according to alleged confessions from
the suspects included in the criminal complaint.
On the night of Jan. 30, the Ruger fell out of a pocket from clothing
on the body of David Keeley after the 37-year-old was shot several times
outside the White House Cafe on Hazle Street in Wilkes-Barre. He died
a short time later. It was unclear how Keeley obtained the gun. The suspects
said they sold it to a drug dealer known as Bully, police
said.
Investigators said they were tipped off to the suspects in the burglary
spree after an employee of D&R Sporting Goods in Nanticoke told Nanticoke
police that Jarmusik came to the store in December to sell two guns.
The burglaries occurred Sept. 4, Nov. 22 and Dec. 23 at homes on Huntsville
Road; Sept. 8 at a home on Salansky Road; and Jan. 17 at the Hillside
Road residence.
Jarmusik was interviewed on Jan. 15 and admitted committing two of the
burglaries in the Back Mountain, but was more forthcoming in an interview
on Jan. 19, two days after the last burglary in the spree, police said.
According to police, he told police what he knew about the Jan. 17 burglary
at 1098 Hillside Road that Ruzanski was involved and was aided
by several people, including Eric Novak of Nanticoke. He also knew the
types of guns taken and the manner of entry to the home and admitted to
traveling with several people to Wilkes-Barre, where Fink traded the guns
to a drug dealer they all knew, the criminal complaint filed with District
Judge James Tupper, Trucksville, says.
Ruzanski admitted his role in the Jan. 17 burglary when interviewed, according
to investigators.
Another man, Joe Sinkiewicz, told police he encountered Ruzanski and Novak
in Nanticoke on Jan. 17 and they asked him to drive them to Plymouth,
but they made him drive to Jackson Township. Sinkiewicz and Novak stayed
in the car and parked by the Hillside Dairy, while Ruzanski approached
a home. He appeared several minutes later wearing gloves, and then the
three drove back to Nanticoke, where they went their separate ways, police
said.
Jarmusik and Ruzanski, who were previously incarcerated prior to Tuesdays
arrest warrants, were charged with various counts of burglary, criminal
trespass, receiving stolen property and criminal conspiracy.
Both men have pleaded guilty to theft-related charges in the past, court
records show.
Fink, Jarmusiks girlfriend, is facing the same charges, but police
have yet to apprehend her.
The investigation is continuing and police said they expect to make more
arrests.

Cops bust Nanticoke-based drug ring
Authorities say persons allegedly sold between $3,000 and $8,000 worth
of drugs a day from location.
By rlieback@leader.net
A drug ring that sold between $3,000 to $8,000 worth
of drugs per day at 21 W. Noble St. was broken up by Nanticoke police
and members of the Luzerne County Drug Task Force on Friday night.
Two people were arrested in the bust, but more than 20 additional people
who arrived at the residence at different times to purchase crack cocaine
Friday were taken into custody, Capt. William Schultz said Monday.
Carol Hedlund, 48, who resided at the home, and Matthew Vasquez, 27, of
Allentown, were charged with numerous felony drug charges, Schultz said.
Court papers said Hedlund sold crack cocaine to a confidential informant
at the residence and allowed dealers to use the residence to distribute
drugs.
After entering the residence at 6:40 p.m., police located Vasquez on the
second floor. He was in possession of more than 25 grams of crack cocaine
and about $2,500, police said.
Police also learned Vasquez was on state parole on a controlled substance
violation, Schultz said.
While officers were searching the apartment, more than 20 additional people
arrived at the residence to purchase drugs, police said.
Three of them were wanted on outstanding warrants from other agencies,
police said.
The additional arrests lead to the seizure of more cash and drug paraphernalia
charges, police said. Police also have issued warrants for others involved.
The arrests come after a five-month investigation, which included a confidential
informant purchasing drugs at the residence nine times from multiple people,
court papers said.
During one incident in September, the informant was asked to take a dealer
to Wilkes-Barre to replenish a drug supply, court papers said.
In another incident, police surveillance cameras observed more than 10
people enter the home for a few minutes and then leave. Police said they
were using the front and rear entrances.
A juvenile from Philadelphia who was wanted in connection with a Philadelphia
robbery was also arrested during the bust. The juvenile, whose family
could not be located, was taken into protective custody and then to the
Luzerne County Children and Youth Services.
Police said Hedlund was charged with delivery and possession of a controlled
substance and criminal conspiracy. She was taken to the Luzerne County
Correctional Facility for lack of $12,000 bail.
Vasquez was charged with delivery and possession of a controlled substance,
possession of drug paraphernalia, false identification and criminal conspiracy.

Police investigate rash of burglaries
By Elizabeth Skrapits, Staff Writer
Since mid-December, four Nanticoke businesses and one church have been
broken into.
City police are trying to determine whether the incidents
are related, and if the church break-in has anything to do with similar
ones in other parts of Luzerne County.
The first Nanticoke burglary occurred Dec. 13, when someone smashed a
cracked front window to get into Antonio's Pizza, 202 E. Main St.
Next was the Learning Station, 133 Alden Road, on Dec. 16. On the same
day, there was an attempted break-in at Rich's Hide-A-Way, 123 Robert
St., Newport Township, Nanticoke Det. William Shultz said.
During the New Year's weekend of Jan. 1-3, someone climbed a fire escape
and broke into Griffins' Peak, a shop at 206 E. Main St. Various collectible
cards were taken, Shultz said.
Also during that weekend, someone tried but failed to get into the basement
of the F&M Masonic Lodge at 210 E. Main St., Shultz said.
City police believe at least the three East Main Street incidents are
related.
They are also investigating whether a Dec. 28 break-in at the Glad Tidings
Assembly of God church at 220 Middle Road has anything to do with similar
burglaries.
The burglar pried open the back door of the church, which is in a fairly
isolated part of the city, and took an undisclosed amount of money, Shultz
said.
Someone did the same to the Roaring Brook Baptist Church and the Oakdale
United Methodist Church in Hunlock Township some time between Sunday and
Monday, according to state police.
State police at Shickshinny say there have been a rash of church burglaries
in lower Luzerne County.
Also between midnight Sunday and 7:30 p.m. Monday, someone broke into
Muhlenberg United Methodist Church, Main Road, Union Township, and Hunlock
Creek United Methodist Church, Main Road, Hunlock Township. In each church,
the burglar rummaged through drawers and cabinets, police said.
Nanticoke police are looking to see if there is a connection with more
area church burglaries, Shultz said.
"We've got a couple leads, but several different suspects,"
Shultz said.

Subject: Charges filed against naked motorcycle rider
While on routine patrol June 12, 2004, Saturday evening, Nanticoke
police witnessed a naked woman riding as a passenger on a motorcycle in
the vicinity of South Prospect Street.
Police attempted to stop the motorcycle, pursuing it through several city
streets as some citizens looked on, including a large group of juveniles
near Patriot Square, where the Nanticoke Musicfest was being held.
The motorcycle was finally stopped on Orchard Street, several blocks away
from where police originally noticed the naked woman.
As officers approached the motorcycle, they recognized the woman as Lisa
Ann-Marie Drozdowski, 39, of 140 W. Noble St., Nanticoke.
According to police, Drozdowski then got off the motorcycle and walked
to a sidewalk.
According to the criminal complaint:
Drozdowski was "unsteady on her feet," she was "belligerent," and her
eyes were "bloodshot and glossy." Police said they could smell the odor
of an alcoholic beverage on her breath.
When she was informed she was under arrest, Drozdowski allegedly began
to "yell obscenities and pace around" in a densely populated residential
area.
A friend of Drozdowski then approached the scene and provided her with
her clothes. Police allowed her to dress herself before being taken into
custody.
While being led to a holding cell at the Nanticoke police station, Drozdowski
allegedly dropped what an officer believed was a pipe used for smoking
a controlled substance. An officer told her to leave the item where it
was, but she picked it up and threw it into a toilet and attempted to
flush it.
As an officer tried to prevent her from flushing the toilet, Drozdowski
began kicking the officer in the groin. Drozdowski continued to kick the
officer and resisted police efforts to restrain her, according to the
criminal complaint.
She eventually was taken out of the cell and handcuffed.
Police then seized the pipe in the toilet, which they believe, from law
enforcement experience, is an item used to ingest/smoke crack or marijuana,
police said.
Drozdowski was charged with aggravated assault, simple assault, indecent
exposure, open lewdness, public drunkenness, resisting arrest, tampering
with evidence, disorderly conduct and possession of drug paraphernalia.
She was transported to the Luzerne County Correctional Facility, where
she remained incarcerated Sunday night in lieu of $3,000 straight cash
bail.
A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for June 17 at 9 a.m. in front
of District Justice Donald Whittaker, Nanticoke.
Nanticoke police also pointed out that Drozdowski was arrested on June
2 for driving under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance.
According to the criminal complaint in that arrest, after failing a field
sobriety test, she was taken into custody. In custody, Drozdowski allegedly
permitted officers to enter her car to retrieve her purse. As an officer
retrieved the purse, he found an open can of beer inside her car.
Her purse was then searched and officers allegedly found baking soda,
a large spoon, a lighter, a Brillo type pad, and a small metal box that
contained what the officer recognized as crack cocaine. The officer determined,
from past experience, the items were instruments used for the manufacture
and ingestion of crack cocaine, according to police.
An officer asked Drozdowski what the substance was and she allegedly said,
"It's what you think it is."
Drozdowski was then taken to Wilkes-Barre General Hospital where blood
and urine samples were taken. After the samples were analyzed, the results
showed Drozdowski was under the influence of cocaine, benzoylecgonine
and barbituate, according to police.
In this incident, Drozdowski was charged with three counts of driving
under the influence of alcohol or a controlled substance; one count of
prohibited acts, penalties of the drug, device, and cosmetic act; six
counts of prohibited act of the controlled substance, drug, device and
cosmetic act; restrictions on alcoholic beverages (open container) and
several traffic violations.
Following Saturday's arrest, Nanticoke police said Drozdowski identified
herself as a Luzerne County employee.
Controller Steve Flood confirmed on Sunday that Drozdowski is currently
employed by his office in the accounts payable department. He said Drozdowski
worked at Valley Crest Nursing Home for several years before going on
workman's compensation in 2001.
Later in 2001, she was restricted to light duty in the accounts payable
department of the controller's office, Flood said.
Only a few weeks after Flood took office in 2002, the accounts payable
department was put under the supervision of the Human Resources and Budget
Department, Flood said.
Only recently was the accounts payable department put back under the supervision
of the controller's office, he said.
Flood said Drozdowski started working in the controller's office on Thursday;
however she went home early for the day-sometime before 2:45 p.m.- without
anyone's permission. Drozdowski then didn't show up for work on Friday,
Flood said.
Flood said he was planning to reprimand Drozdowski on Monday for missing
work on Friday.
He added that other county supervisors have had problems with Drozdowski
in the past.
Earlier in the year Drozdowski didn't show up for work for 25 days while
in the other office, Flood said.
"I knew she was going to be a problem when she came back, but not this
kind of problem," Flood said about the arrest allegations.
Flood said he was unaware of Drozdowski's June 2 arrest.
Commissioner Steve Urban said he couldn't comment on the status or future
of Drozdowski's employment because he hadn't been informed on all the
allegations.
He did say county workers in general should conduct themselves properly
on and off duty because their conduct is a reflection on the county.
When contacted during the day on Sunday, before it was confirmed that
Drozdowski was a county employee, Commissioner Todd Vonderheid said the
allegation against Drozdowski, if she was a county employee, would be
something on the commissioner's agenda for the week.
