Know
Your City Government
Nanticoke
is a Third Class city that operates under a commission
form of local government.
The
mayor is a city council member and acts as council president.
There
are three classes of cities in Pennsylvania, first,
second, and third.
Each
council member is in charge of a major department.
The
mayor, council members, controller and treasurer are
elected for four-year terms, with council members' terms
overlapping.
Appointment
of all other city employees and officials who perform
services for the city is made by council.
Nanticoke,
as well as all Third Class cities, operates under authority
of the General Assembly through the Third Class City
Code.
Some
municipal powers of council include making policy decisions,
levying taxes, authorizing expenditure of public funds,
and directly administering city government.
